A number of people were
walking across the obvious lower dam at the end of the road, and I
started walking also. Then I went back and got my bike -- and people
were surprised to see somebody riding across the dam and onto the
paved trail on the other side.

why I stopped riding + left my bike
-- instead walked up the paved road to the upper lake

reached the upper dam

it's been colder at the upper lake (the old lake): Lac du Vieux
Emosson

more of the upper dam

road back down starts interesting . . .

. . . gets more interesting:
steep, narrow, with serious consequences for a steering or balance
mistake toward one side

and two tunnels
